Fanart accrediting: an actual serious trend people need to follow

no

Props to the guy who made it and the guy who made said variation. Doesn’t seem to have left a name…crap I contradicted myself just now didn’t I.

Seriously, need I say more? Although I mostly use episode caps, I still make the horrendous mistake of blatantly taking another image without crediting it. Even more unfortunately is the fact that I surf imageboards to do it. People need to start crediting fan artists for their hard work, because obviously fanart can just beat the heck out of the original art sometimes. Either use proper credits or don’t use the picture at all. If ignorant people keep ripping images off of whateverbooru or other places, the above image is the fate of all the fanart, inevitably. OFP, people.

On the other hand:

Aspiring artists need to make their name KNOWN. It can be seriously hard when trying to credit said images if we can’t find any trace of you, anonymous artist. And of course if we can’t find it, lazyness and “don’t care” attitude prevails. Show yourself, sign your work with a pretty signature, and dazzle us with your awesome masterpieces.

So clearly we need action from both fronts. Thus, I suggest:

  • The start of crediting whatever fanart you may find
  • If unable to locate the source, either don’t use it/find alternatives/source the location of said image
  • Making the work easily creditable on behalf of the artist.

People love credit. Time to give what they deserve.

What if I’m the kind of artist who intentionally makes unnamed, unsigned art? I’d do that to see who would steal my work and claim it as their own..then show up in the future with a copy of the original .PSD file and publically humiliate the FAG who stole my art. EPICPWNGEFTW

As far as I could say, I’m quite guilty with this. XD
Though still, I believe that if your going to use fanarts in your blog post at least put some credit that you are not the one who made it and put who did it. If you forgot, just credit him/her indirectly from the place you really got the fanart from. (I get most of the pictures I use in Pixiv).
Although it varies because not all depends on Pixiv alone, some go to image boards such as Danbooru and stuff. At least one thing should be made clear in your blog post, tell them that you are not the one who made it :P
While others don’t care, I support this fanart creditting. I can be forgetful at times but at least I don’t claim anything that’s not mine :P LOL :D

    @7thwraith First anon artist?
@kirapika: The more you know. :)

Wow what a difference 24hrs make eh? Sure didn’t see this shitstorm coming.
I agree with more moderate viewpoints out there. Credit should be given if it’s within reasonable efforts to find out who the artist is, but it’s kinda dumb to expect people to spend hours trying to find out who made some random piece of image they got from the internet.
Since I draw once in while, maybe I should start putting my signatures on my works. It’s not like anyone looks at my stuff though lol.

There is no excuse to not to credit the image if it’s from danbooru since they provide the source of the image anyways and you can obtain the artist’s name

    1. Reltair says:

Nice, I didn’t know about Danbooru. I guess I’ll be using it now for images.
I definitely agree that credit should be given where credit is due.

Finally. I’ve experienced how that feels, and I must say the feeling of someone getting credit for work that wasn’t even that person’s is more than just annoying, or frustrating.
Still, while I do agree that credit must be given to whom it is due, but yeah the artist must make him/herself known. Or, at least make it known that you’re not the one who created it and show where you got it. I suppose both sides have to do something to make things work out.

What’s up with this hot topic about crediting the artist? I credit the artist when I post a fanart(if I knew where the art was), well expect my art since I don’t want people to know I drew it. XD …. Oh shi-

  9. Seinime says:

@TJ: Yes, makes it easier to get noticed.
    @Chikorita157: Of course.
@Reltair How did you get your pictures before!?
@Dokimasu: Actually…the lazyness is washing over me now…o shi-

I’ve since spared the thought of making a coherent post by putting it simply: it’s up to the individual to enforce this citation policy. Talk to me about morals and ethics once the Orweillian Military Police has been set up.

What’s the news? Seems to be 4-5 blogs have posted something like this already…

  12. msdzero says:

“now this is one other reason for me to stop making winamp/rainmeter skin”
That’s how I thought when reading this whole issue. Then I have a thought: what about the usage of original art? like from artbook? or magazine?

  13. Argyle says:

Thats true~! Some people actually use my drawings in sites every now and then, some don’t even credit me even though my signature is right THERE~!! T__T…..I also love crediting ppl..but most of the time..i don’t see an artists’ name in the picture or inside the picture data -__-

  14. Ryan A says:

So many issue, but yea. I’m sure bloggers would credit if they saw something that said, “Please credit and link back if you use this art elsewhere.”  … I don’t think the majority are purposly trying to “steal” art.
    Writing a little post now.

  15. Seinime says:

@DK_Eternity: We need a compromise, not useless rage.
@TP: Until the OFP police arrive, I’m pretty much impartial about this.
@Bill: Another movement to credit fanart. -_-
@msdzero: Make your skins, that I don’t think people will rage on. Just like avatars and the such.
@Argyle: Which is why authors need to make an effort too.
@Ryan A: People just use it ‘cuz it’s awesome. Jeez artists, live with that already.

Usually then is it okay to link back to the image where you find it? That’s what I usually do, otherwise I usually mention that this is a fanart found so and so.. I do expect, and as I see from my stats – occasionally people do press on the link to go back to the original site where I linked it to.

To not credit, and take as your own – isn’t that considered plagiarism and rude – if the artist finds out what is happening? I recall seeing how someone stole images from Dancing Queen and that was just rude. Or as in the example of Hinano – report the shit out of them..
