K-ON! 1: Riffs that Rock
I'm as glad as Yui is after watching this episode.

Synopsis:
(Based on the K-ON 4koma.)
Yui gets off to a hectic start as she begins her high school years. She gets bombarded with club invitations, and has trouble picking which one to join. Ritsu and Mio wants to revive the K-ON (Karui Ongaku -> Light music) club, but all the members are already graduated, and is near its final days before the club gets disbanded.
Ritsu eventually gets a girl named Tsumugi to join, although she was looking for the choir club. With this, they are 75% complete, with Mio playing bass and Ritsu on drums. All they need is a guitarist. Yui finally picks the K-ON club as her choice since she remembers her old days in music class, during kindergarten.
As she enters, the girls liven up and bribe her with all sorts of delicacies to join the club, but she sadly reveals that she cannot play guitar. However, after a final effort by the other girls to get Yui to join by playing up a poorly composed yet motivating tune, Yui is finally persuaded to join as an aspiring guitarist.
Impressions:
After suffering through a crappy week filled with tests and whatnot, K-ON was what put a smile back on my face. KyoAni impressed me yet again with another great anime, this time appealing to a music and slice-of-live type. The art reminds me of Kannagi, as well as there being times when you’re reminded about Lucky Star as well. The animation feels a bit rough on the edges, but still doesn’t take away much from the whole viewing experience. But enough about KyoAni fanboyism. Yui, Ritsu, Mio, and Tsumugi are already a dynamic combo, with Yui as the clumsy yet motivated guitarist, Mitsu as the happy-go-lucky and creative drummist, Mio as the quiet but supportive bass, and Tsumugi as the cheerful, gentle keyboardist. I feel that all of the characters relate pretty well to their corresponding instruments. With lively characters, slice-of-life comedy, music, and KyoAni’s smooth animation, K-ON is definitely one of spring’s best picks. I can expect the series to get better and better as time goes on. Soon we’ll be hearing riffs that rock!

Kannagi, nice spot! It does have that similar design. Also, the flow and designs tend to take at least a couple episodes/watches to adapt in the mind (ie Minami-ke). The concept is at least delightful ^^

Figured I was probably more suited for commenting rather than blogging, sorry for the let down.
Anyways, I think you hit the essence of the first episode right on the nail. The characters despite their character sets, remain dynamic enough to make it entertaining. I’ll be looking forward to your further entries on this and other series.
